Old Stories, New Voices

5 young artists will be selected from Helsingborg to join a Nordic program and a summer residency in Denmark.

Application deadline: 15 January 2026.

What is it?

Old Stories, New Voices is a youth-led, cross-border performance project bringing together young artists (16–30) from Denmark, Greenland, and Sweden to reinterpret Nordic folklore through a contemporary, inclusive lens. The work becomes a site-specific performance installation created for Kedlen — a former hospital turned cultural venue — using sound, movement, storytelling, and space.

The project asks:

  • What happens when we retell ancient stories through our own experiences and identities?

  • What do these tales mean when seen from a youth perspective today?

  • How can performance, movement, sound, and space bring these new versions to life?

Who we’re looking for

Kulturrummet is selecting 5 young artists based in Helsingborg (or with a strong connection to the city/region) to form the Swedish group.

You do not need to be a “professional” artist to apply. We’re looking for people who are:

  • able to take part fully in the process (time + presence + responsibility)

  • open to learning, experimenting, and collaborating across disciplines

  • curious about storytelling, myth, identity, and collective creation

Your background can be in (but is not limited to): performance, dance, theatre, music/sound, spoken word, writing, visual art, film, design, craft, digital creation, community arts, or interdisciplinary practice. If you work with stories, bodies, sound, space, or collective making—apply.

We encourage applications from young people who are underrepresented in cultural opportunities, including people from marginalized communities (for example LGBTQ+ applicants, applicants living with disability, applicants from rural backgrounds, and applicants with lived experience of migration).

If you are under 18, we will require written consent from your parent or legal guardian (vårdnadshavare).

What you’ll do

Across the process you’ll co-create from the ground up—building a work together with participants from the three countries.

You will:

  • Join a local study circle at Kulturrummet with 6 meetings (Jan–Jun 2026), connected to online mentor workshops to explore themes, research folklore, and develop material across countries

  • Participate in a creative residency at Kedlen, Denmark (5–15 July 2026) where the full Nordic group builds the installation and performance

  • Take part in public performances at Kedlen (16–19 July 2026)

  • Contribute to sharing the work later through a partner event in Helsingborg (Autumn 2026)

  • Two participants will also get the chance to participate in a partner event in Nuuk, Greenland (Autumn 2026)

Dates (commitment)

  • 6 workshops (Jan–Jun 2026): once a month, mandatory to attend. First meeting will be on 26 or 27 of January. The other preliminary dates are: 23 February, 30 March, 27 April, 25 May, 29 June. The meeting time is in the evening between 17.00 and 20.00

  • Residency (Denmark): 5–15 July 2026

  • Performances (Denmark): 16–19 July 2026

  • One Day event in Helsingborg (Autumn 2026)

  • One Day event in Nuuk, Greeland (Autumn 2026)

What’s covered

  • Travel and accommodation for 5 participants to the summer residency in Denmark are covered by the project.

  • Travel and accommodation for two participants to Greenland are covered by the project.

Selection principles

We will select a group that can truly collaborate across disciplines and perspectives—looking at:

  • Curiosity and willingness to experiment

  • Commitment to the full timeline

  • Collaborative mindset

  • Diversity of voices, methods, and lived experiences

Kulturrummet reserves the right to select more than 5 participants in the first stage (Helsingborg process). The final group traveling to the residency will be confirmed based on commitment, engagement, and participation during the process in Helsingborg.
